Every individual has a different surgery experience. Laparoscopic surgeons in Islamabad conceded to this fact. We might have various expectations but they probably won’t come true. Even the fearless fear the surgery.
The best thing about laparoscopic surgery is that it is minimally invasive. The aftercare process is not too posh and not too unique. And the chances of complications are so low that most people don’t have to fear anything.
The healing process and time vary individually. Some people are back on their feet within a few days while some people need more time. So you cannot expect that your surgery will be exactly the same as everyone else.
The healing period will also depend on your tolerance to pain and the extent of your surgery. A patient’s perspective cannot determine what will happen in the surgery but it can affect how your body heals after the surgery.
What is in the Laparoscopic Procedure?
It is a minimally invasive procedure, done with local anesthesia where the incision is made near the abdomen and pelvic area, and a rigid scope is inserted to get the internal view of organs. Carbon dioxide is added into the abdomen which allows the surgeon to see more clearly with the scope. The scope has a light attached at the front, which then helps guide the scope into the abdomen.
The surgeons might also add a camera along with the light to see enlarged images. Surgical instruments might also be used in addition to the scope. For instance, if the individual has endometriosis, the surgeon will examine the pelvic area and look for cysts or abscesses, or any other abnormality along the endometrial wall.
The doctor will check other organs as well, knowing your medical history will help the surgeon know what exactly to look for. A diagnosis is made during the procedure as well as the treatment is also done.
Hospital Stay
Usually, you do not need to stay the night after having the surgery. So the surgery is done on the outpatient basis. If there were more abnormalities found than suggested before, or there were some complications during the surgery or the surgery itself was complicated then you might need to stay overnight or possibly a day or two. So it is better to prepare yourself beforehand for a hospital stay.
Don’t Let Fear Rule You
It is normal to be fearful. It is natural to fear the unknown even after the many assurances of the surgeons and the hospital staff. It is better to talk to your surgeon about what exactly you are afraid of so that your fears can be eased. You can know about how to manage pain beforehand as well as a few exercises that can lower your stress level.
Diet Before Surgery
Surgeons always recommend a certain diet 24 hours before the surgery or restrict all types of food before the surgery. The same is the case with laparoscopy. Most doctors recommend not eating and only consuming liquids at least an evening before the surgery. It is better to evacuate the bowels completely before the surgery, so there is no complication or restriction during the procedure.
After Surgery Pain
Since you are under local or general anesthesia, you will feel pain following the surgery when you are shifted into the recovery room. Always inform your surgeon and nurse about the level of pain you are suffering from. If any other thing bothers you, don’t hesitate to talk to your surgeon. Pain medication is usually given that needs to be taken as per the prescribed dose.
Have Someone with You
It is never easy to get surgery done especially if you are alone. It is better to have a family member or a friend with you. They can support you before the surgery and lend you a helping hand after the surgery as well.
Shoulder Pain and Nausea
Carbon dioxide sometimes gets trapped against the diaphragm which causes shoulder pain. Usually, pain meds and applying heat to the area can take care of it, but if the pain increases beyond management, you should seek consultation. Some also experience nausea which can again be managed by medications or some can drink to alleviate nausea.
Other precautions also need to be taken. Prepare yourself mentally for the surgery and get relaxed after the surgery. Take good care of yourself mentally and physically and avoid stress.
